Mites in My Lawn

I have a nice house in Denver, and I like to keep a nice lawn. Now winter is approaching, and I know that’s going to hurt, but I want to make sure everything is green and beautiful again once spring comes around. I heard from my wife, who heard from her friend, about a certain pest I had never heard of called the banks turf mite. It turns out, as winter come, our lawn is perfect for these pests to thrive. My wife and I were, of course, worried. My wife suggested hiring some sort of exterminator. I said, “Hon, don’t worry, I’ll take care of it.”

And I dove into researching these mites. It seems as winter hits, there’s not much you can do, but it still being late fall, if I just kept up a regular watering regiment for my lawn, I’ll already have a built a huge deterrent. It also turned out already having a well-kept lawn kept the mites away, but of course this was not enough to calm my wife’s feeling of looming doom. So I followed a couple simple instructions. Every weekend, I was out bundled up in the November weather with the mower, keeping my grass trim. Now, we had turned off the hose for the winter, so I had to climb down into the basement to turn it back on. At the hardware store I found some nice eco-friendly type of insecticide you attach right to your hose and spray the lawn. I had to wait til the evening, after the dogs went in, I didn’t want them getting sick off the stuff, no matter how safe the packaging claims the insecticide is, and I’d spray the whole lawn. Every weekend. Now these mites are little things. I don’t know if they’re gone, if  they were ever there, but my wife and I are comforted, come spring, we’ll once again have the lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood. But, you know, the grass is still looking a little dry…
